Intrusive Drunks

Yesterday Gareth and I went off to Wigan for the rugby, the Wigan Warriors against Catalan Dragons (a close win, thanks for asking), part of our days away at Wigan are of course the train journeys there and back, I like travelling by train, I’ve just always enjoyed train journeys. What I don’t enjoy so much is when the drunk folk travelling back from a night out get on our train on our return journey.

I sometimes forget just how loud, brash, bad mannered and annoying people can be, especially drunken people and not just youngsters, 30 something’s (and above) can be terribly intrusive on every one else’s senses as proven last night. As is often the case a group of people (30 something’s), mainly guys but there were a couple of females amongst them, got on our train.

They were obviously drunk, returning in very high spirits from their revelling, they were noisy, foul mouthed, the conversation often involved loud talk about very personal sexual experience, the guys were bad, very bad, yet one of the worst offenders was a young lady (I say lady !), not only was she louder than the rest but she had such an annoying, screechy, ear piercing voice, I was close to throwing myself (or better still her) out of the train window.

Ok so these people were drunk, I know people tend to swear more when drunk and will probably talk about things they wouldn’t when sober, the problem I really have is that these people don’t have any doubt that the whole world wants to hear everything they have to say in very loud tones, I find this very intrusive and bad mannered, I also find it very, very annoying. Also these types of drunks also often find it necessary to force complete strangers who just want to mind their own business to take some kind of part in their loud drunken soap opera, again extremely intrusive.

If I want my senses assailed by loud obnoxious folk making loud annoying noises or sharing personal experiences fit only for themselves and their equally inane friends then I’ll watch “EastEnders” or the “Eurovision Song Contest”, thanks but no thanks.

On a lighter note, Gareth and I did a slight spot of celebrity spotting last night, well apart from the semi celebrities we saw playing rugby of course, while we were stood on Wigan station waiting for our train to come home we were passed by TV comedian Mark Steel who had just got off another train, he was wearing a (I thought) rather funny hat but I’m pretty sure it was him though, Mark if you read this (yeah likely isn’t it) could you confirm it was you :-)
